America, the Junior State

The Junior State of America, also known as JSA and formerly as the Junior Statesmen of America, is a non-partisan youth organization in the United States.

Young people in the United States can join the non-partisan Junior State of America (JSA), formerly known as the Junior Statesmen of America. The goal of the Junior Statesman's Association (JSA) is to equip high school students with the knowledge and confidence to effectively participate in civic life and debate. The Junior State of America Foundation, Inc., is responsible for JSA. (JSA Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization) runs the JSA Summer Schools. JSA is the largest student-run organization in the US. [1][better source needed]

Overview [ edit ]

Everything, from the smallest club to the largest regional conference, is organized by students. Conventions, conferences, and political awareness events are coordinated by members who elect leaders at the local, regional, and state levels.

The Junior Service Organization (JSA) operates on both a regional and a national scale. This is because JSA is divided into regions that roughly correspond to the actual regions of the United States. Chapter presidents in high schools are responsible for planning events and gatherings for their respective chapters. Regional one-day conferences are typically organized by mayors and vice mayors. The state's chief executive and his deputy host overnight conventions and other events. Governors coordinate with one another on a national scale to set convention themes and direct the organization's overall course.

Debates, "thought talks," problem solving, and various simulations are all part of the JSA curriculum to help students develop critical thinking skills and a well-rounded worldview. Model United Nations, Model Congress (with a Senate and House of Representatives), crisis simulations, and other activities are all examples of simulations. JSA allows students to network with peers from other areas who share similar interests, and debate conventions often feature fun after-hours activities like going out to eat in the city or engaging in some impromptu debate.

The JSAF not only supports the Junior Service Organization (JSA), but also provides high school students, including those not involved in the JSA, with three- and four-week long Summer School programs. These include events at both Stanford and Georgetown, as well as week-long symposiums on state and local politics held in a number of different states. [2] (In prior years, JSF's Summer School was hosted by institutions such as Yale, Northwestern, UT Austin, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, and Princeton) College-level instruction is provided in areas such as public speaking, economics, history, and politics. Many international students (from places like the United Kingdom, France, Turkey, Micronesia, and the United States) S British Territories, Hong Kong, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) go to Summer School [3] These events generate money that goes toward supporting JSA during the academic year.

History [ edit ]

Beginning in 1934, when Professor E. A Rogers as an experiment in student self-governance at Montezuma Mountain School in Los Gatos, California At Montezuma Mountain School, [4] the students established a three-branch government complete with a student court, police force, executive officer, and legislative branch. They would make, vote on, and abide by their own set of rules [5]

Outside of the United States, the JSA has established connections with other organizations with similar goals. For instance, the Pacific Northwest State and the British Columbia Youth Parliament (BCYP) became very close throughout the 1980s. "Ambassadors" were invited from the Pacific-Northwest State to attend the December BCYP legislative session in Victoria, British Columbia, as well a number of BCYP sponsored events, including the "Vernon Conference" held in 1985, a project to celebrate the United Nations International Year of the Youth, involving the BCYP, the TUXIS Parliament of Alberta, and the JSA In return, BCYP representatives would go to the Pacific-Northwest's Spring and Fall State Conferences. The American School of Honduras in 2006 became a state chapter in California, and its representatives have been regulars at the Congress convention ever since. Both St. Kitts and St. Thomas, USVI, have active chapters. Conventionally, Puerto Rico has had two chapters. All Caribbean groups typically travel to either the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic conventions.

Over half a million students have joined the JSA since its founding in 1934. citation needed(Citation required)

Structure [ edit ]

Arizona, the Middle Atlantic, the Midwest, the Northeast, Northern California, the Ohio River Valley, Pacific Northwest, Southeast, Southern California, and Texas are the JSA's 10 states, which roughly correspond to the US territories. There are one or more regions in each state. The Council of Governors may vote to downgrade a state to territory status if its budget falls below a certain threshold. If a state grows too large to be effectively governed, the Council may decide to divide it up into several smaller territories.

The supporting JSAF is an established, nonprofit organization governed by an adult board of directors, trustees, and a full-time staff. The JSF helps the JSA out with programming and administration.

[15] Both the Fall and Spring State Conventions take place in Houston, Texas, but prior to the pandemic, the Fall State Convention was held in Austin, Texas, at the Texas Capitol. The Winter Congress, hosted by Texas State University, is now held in Houston[18] after moving from Washington, D. C connecting the Midwest to the Atlantic Coast Among the state's elected officials are the following[19]

Former Junior Governor of Texas:

Cities like McAllen and Edinburg can be found in the Rio Grande County, which is located at the very bottom of Texas. Lauren Marquez will serve as the county administrator for Rio Grande in 2021 and '22.

JSA events [ edit ]

During the fall and spring, individual states hold conventions. [ edit ]

Conventions in both the fall and spring take place at hotels and convention centers across the state. Each event features discussions, deep thinking, and unique experiences, such as political fairs and a relaxed dance. Students typically check into their hotel on a Saturday for Fall State and depart on Sunday. In contrast, Spring State typically lasts for three days, with students checking into the hotel on Friday and departing on Sunday. The upcoming year's regional JSA leaders are elected at this year's longer spring convention. Many well-known people, such as Pat Robertson, Ralph Nader, Colin Powell, Jahana Hayes, Tom Malinowski, Fareed Zakaria, and Joe Trippi, have spoken at either the Fall or Spring State conventions. [20]

Meeting of the Congress in the Winter [ edit ]

Students at Winter Congress function in committees modeled after the Senate and House of Representatives in the United States Congress. Legislation is voted on and ultimately passed by student representatives in both the Senate and the House. When a bill receives approval from both houses, it is enacted as law by the Judicial and Stakeholders' Assembly.

Regional Meetings [ edit ]

Smaller conferences and chapter conferences ("chapter-cons") are held on a regional and even a local scale. The Regional Mayors and Vice Mayors, along with the Regional Cabinet members appointed by them, run the Regions. Chapter conventions are typically organized by student groups at individual schools rather than the national JSA.

Cabinet posts and elected officials [ edit ]

Elections for student elected officials to serve one-year terms are held at the annual Spring State conventions of each JSA state. The Governor and Lieutenant Governor are two of the many elected positions in each state. Each official appoints a small cabinet to help them run the organization, which includes things like planning convention logistics, writing debates, creating publicity materials, establishing new chapters, and maintaining websites. The Council of Governors also appoints the National Cabinet. Members of the JSA government and cabinet typically devote a large portion of their week to JSA business.

Ministry of the National Interior [ edit ]

The National Cabinet of JSA coordinates the implementation of policies across all JSA states with the help of the JSA Foundation, the Council of Governors, and state directors. The Council of Governors makes annual appointments to the National Cabinet, which is responsible for coordinating policy and establishing uniform standards for all of the states. The National Cabinet for 2022-2023 includes:

Educational Opportunities During the Summer [ edit ]

When the academic year ends, JSA and JSF host a variety of fun and educational summer programs. Summer Schools, hosted by the Junior Statesmen Foundation at prestigious universities, are the organization's largest and most well-attended program, giving students an in-depth look at all levels of government from city to nation. Young leaders can benefit greatly from these programs, which are designed to get them ready for public service.

High school credit is available through these programs at Stanford, Georgetown, Princeton, and Beijing, where students spend three to four weeks taking two full semester-length courses. Students engage in a robust Speaker's Program, where notable speakers talk to students about current issues, in addition to debate and regular classes (including Advanced Placement and Law Classes). Past speakers have included Mike McCurry, Andy Card, Ben Bernanke, Lee H. Hamilton, Norman Mineta, Joe Trippi, Dennis Kucinich, Chuck Hagel, Katie Couric, Brian Williams, Geraldine Ferraro, John Kerry, Harry Reid, Barack Obama, Ted Rall, George H. W. Bush, Condoleezza Rice, Ed Meese, Bernie Sanders, Brian Williams, Karl Rove, Sebastian Gorka, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders

The summer symposia of Arizona State, Stanford, UCLA, Princeton, and the University of Texas are just a few examples of regional summer institutes. These gatherings typically last between four and five days and cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to politics, international relations, history, and national security. The event at Princeton is known as "Princetitute." The original name for these gatherings was symposia.

Every summer, newly elected governors from across the country gather in Montezuma, Colorado for the Montezuma National Leadership Summit, or "Zuma" for short. The summit takes place in the beginning to the middle of August at Presentation Center in Los Gatos, California. This venue was formerly the Montezuma Mountain School, where JSA was founded in 1934. Attending this summit gives students a deeper understanding of JSA's national and international contexts. To be invited to attend is one of the highest honors bestowed upon a Junior State of America member, and many of the students who do so go on to serve as JSA presidents in the years to Then, two or three students are chosen to serve as National Montezuma Foundation Student Advisors and coordinate with the Junior State Foundation to manage the financial resources for the annual National Montezuma Summit.
