Ordered list of when each state joined the United States

State names and borders on a United States map
The order in which each state ratified the Constitution in 1787, and later, the order in which it was admitted to the Union.

One of the fifty entities that make up the United States and share sovereignty with the federal government is a state. Due to the division of powers between the federal government and the individual states, Americans hold dual citizenship. [1]The full official names of the states of Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia all include the word "commonwealth" rather than "state."

The 50 states are the main political divisions of the USA. They have all the authority that isn't specifically given to or forbidden to the federal government by the United States Constitution. Local matters, such as intrastate commerce, elections, the formation of local governments, public school policy, and non-federal road construction and maintenance, are generally under the purview of state governments. In a republican system of government, each individual state has its own constitution outlining the roles of the executive, legislature, and judiciary. [2]

The United States Congress is a bicameral legislature, composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives, from which citizens of all 50 states and the District of Columbia can elect their own representatives. There are two senators and at least one representative from each state, with the size of each state's delegation in the House of Representatives determined by that state's population as of the most recent decennial census required by the Constitution. The Electoral College is the body that votes for President and Vice President of the United States. [3] Each state has the right to send a number of electors to the Electoral College equal to the sum of its congressional deputies and senators. [4]

The Constitution specifically gives Congress the power to add new states in Article IV, Section 3, Clause 1. The original 13 states of the United States have since been joined by another 33, bringing the total to 50. All newly admitted states have been given full voting rights. [5]

Each of the 50 states' official statehood dates is listed below. After signing on to the United States Declaration of Independence in July 1776, the first 13 states formally entered the Union of States between 1777 and 1781 by ratifying the Articles of Confederation, the country's first constitution. (A separate table detailing dates of AoC ratification is provided below.) In the order in which they joined the new (and current) federal government after ratifying the Constitution in 1787, these states are listed below. Each subsequent state's admission date is a statutory deadline established by Congress. [a]

The dates of ratification of the Articles of Confederation [ edit ]

On November 15, 1777, the Articles of Confederation were approved by the Second Continental Congress and sent to the individual states for ratification. After the 13 states ratified the Articles of Confederation on March 1, 1781, they became law. The Articles of Confederation were abolished and the present Constitution ratified on March 4, 1789, ushering in the modern federal government. [45]

Notes [ edit ]

  1. ^ The Civil War secession and subsequent readmission to the Union of 11 states (Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas) is not reflected on this list. Similarly, the federal government does not recognize the states' separation from the Union, so each state's "readmission to representation in Congress" after the war is valid. Even though the Constitution is silent on the subject, the Supreme Court ruled in Texas v. White (1869) that a state cannot secede from the Union without the consent of the other states. [7]
  2. ^ Similar to "Three Lower Counties Upon Delaware" On June 15, 1776, the Delaware Assembly passed a resolution officially ending the colony's relationship with Great Britain and establishing the three counties as a new state called "the Government of the Counties of New Castle." Upon the Delaware River, Kent and Sussex [9]
  3. ^ Benning Wentworth, New Hampshire's provincial governor from 1749 to 1764, issued roughly 135 grants for unoccupied land claimed by New Hampshire west of the Connecticut River (in what is today southern Vermont), territory also claimed by New York. The Green Mountain Boys emerged as a result of the ensuing "New Hampshire Grants" dispute, and the Vermont Republic came into being as a direct result of their efforts. In 1764, by royal order of George III, New Hampshire's claim upon the land was extinguished, and in 1790, the State of New York ceded its land claim to Vermont for $30,000.
  4. ^ On December 18, 1789, the Virginia General Assembly passed a bill approving the secession of the "District of Kentucky" from the rest of Virginia and paving the way for the establishment of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. [17]
  5. ^ Ohio's statehood date is shrouded in mystery. The 7th Congress passed an act "authorizing the inhabitants of Ohio to form a Constitution and state government, and admission of Ohio into the Union" on April 30, 1802 (Sess.). 1, ch 40, 2 Stat. 173) Ohio's execution of federal law was legislated by the same Congress on February 19, 1803 (Sess. 2, ch 7, 2 Stat. 201) However, neither statute established an official date of statehood. Ohio did not become a state until 1953, when a Joint resolution (Pub. L. 83-204, 67 Stat. 407) was passed by the 83rd Congress "for admitting the State of Ohio into the Union." On this day in 1953, August 7th, ) which fixed the date as March 1, 1803 [20]
  6. ^ On June 19, 1819, the Massachusetts General Court passed enabling legislation separating the "District of Maine" from the rest of the State (an action approved by Maine voters on July 19, 1819, by 17,001 to 7,132); then, on February 25, 1820, Massachusetts Governor John Adams signed the bill into law. an additional measure was passed recognizing Maine's impending statehood. [17]
  7. ^ After the Bear Flag Revolt and Mexican-American War in 1848, Mexico ceded most of what had been the Mexican Department of Alta California to the United States. As part of the Compromise of 1850, Congress passed an act making California the 31st state.
  8. ^ West Virginia was officially established by an act of the General Assembly of the Restored Government of Virginia on May 13, 1862. Subsequently, in the case of Virginia v. West Virginia (1871), the Supreme Court implicitly confirmed that the secessionist counties of Virginia had the requisite consents for statehood. [36]
  9. ^ a b North and South Dakota are the only twin-born states in the United States, having been created within minutes of each other on the same day. When President Benjamin Harrison was ready to sign the statehood documents, he shuffled them so that no one would know in advance which territory was about to become a state. Since "n" comes before "s" in the alphabet, North Dakota is traditionally considered the 39th state, while South Dakota is the 40th. [39][40]
