Ordered list of when each state joined the United States

State names and borders are labeled on a United States map.
It follows the sequence established by the ratification of the Constitution by the original 13 states in 1787 and the subsequent admission of new states to the Union.

The 50 individual states that make up the United States are co-sovereign entities with the federal government. Because of the separation of powers that exists in the United States, citizens of the federal republic are also citizens of the state in which they currently reside. [1]The full official names of the states of Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia all include the word "commonwealth" rather than "state."

The fifty states constitute the most basic administrative divisions of the USA. They have all the authority that isn't given to or taken away by the federal government in the United States Constitution. Concerns such as intrastate commerce, elections, the formation of local governments, public school policy, and non-federal road construction and maintenance fall under the purview of state governments. The government of each state is divided into an executive, legislative, and judicial branch, and it is based on a constitution written in accordance with republican principles. [2]

The United States Congress is a bicameral legislature made up of senators and representatives from all 50 states. Every state has two senators and at least one representative in the House of Representatives, with the size of each state's delegation in the House determined by the population of the state as of the most recent decennial census required by the Constitution. Additionally, the Electoral College, the body that elects the President and Vice President of the United States, allows each state to choose a number of electors to vote in the election proportional to the number of its representatives and senators in Congress. [4]

The power to Union" target="_blank">admit new states into the Union is delegated to Congress in Article IV, Section 3, Clause 1 of the Constitution. Since its founding in 1776, the United States has grown from its original 13 to its current 50 states. All newly admitted states have been given full voting rights. [5]

Below is a table with information about when each of the 50 states became independent. After signing on to the United States Declaration of Independence in July 1776, the first 13 states formally became independent nations in their own right on July 4th, 1776, and ratified the Articles of Confederation, the first constitution of the United States, between 1777 and 1781. (See below for a table detailing the timeline of Acts of Consecration) States are listed in the order in which they ratified the Constitution in 1787 and thus became part of the newly formed (and still existing) federal government. Each subsequent state's admission date is a statutory deadline established by Congress. [a]

Ratification of the Articles of Confederation [ edit ]

On November 15, 1777, the Articles of Confederation were approved for ratification by the individual states by the Second Continental Congress. After being ratified by the required number of states (13 in this case), the Articles of Confederation took effect on March 1, 1781. The Articles of Confederation, which governed the states, were abolished on March 4, 1789, and the present Constitution, which governs the federal government, was adopted. [45]

Notes [ edit ]

  1. ^ The Civil War secession and subsequent readmission to the Union of 11 states (Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas) is not reflected on this list. Similarly, the federal government does not recognize the states' separation from the Union, so each state's "readmission to representation in Congress" after the war is valid. While the Constitution itself is silent on the subject of whether or not states have the power to secede from the Union, the Supreme Court ruled in Texas v. White (1869) that a state does not have the power to secede on its own. [7]
  2. ^ The "Three Lower Counties Upon Delaware" are another name for this area. On June 15, 1776, the Delaware Assembly passed a resolution ending Delaware's status as a British colony and establishing the three counties as a new state governed by "the Government of the Counties of New Castle." A View of Delaware from Kent and Sussex [9]
  3. ^ New Hampshire's provincial governor, Benning Wentworth, issued about 135 grants for uninhabited land claimed by New Hampshire west of the Connecticut River (in what is now southern Vermont) between 1749 and 1764. This territory was also claimed by New York. As a result of the "New Hampshire Grants" conflict, the Green Mountain Boys emerged, and eventually Vermont became its own independent nation. George III issued an edict in 1764 canceling New Hampshire's claim to the territory, and in 1790, New York sold Vermont its claim to the land for $30,000.
  4. ^ On December 18, 1789, the Virginia General Assembly passed a bill separating the "District of Kentucky" from the rest of Virginia and approving Kentucky's statehood. [17]
  5. ^ Ohio's official statehood date is shrouded in mystery. An act "authorizing the inhabitants of Ohio to form a Constitution and state government, and admission of Ohio into the Union" (Sess) was passed on April 30, 1802 by the 7th Congress. 1, ch 40, 2 Stat. 173) This same Congress passed an act on February 19, 1803 (Sess. 1, 1) "providing for the execution of the laws of the United States in the State of Ohio." 2, ch 7, 2 Stat. 201) However, neither statute established an official date of statehood. As a result of the passage of a Joint resolution "for admitting the State of Ohio into the Union" by the 83rd Congress (Pub. L. 83-204, 67 Stat. 407, enacted 1953), Ohio did not become a state until after this year. Dated: August 7th, 1953 which established March 1st, 1803 as the official start date [20]
  6. ^ On June 19, 1819, the Massachusetts General Court passed enabling legislation separating the "District of Maine" from the rest of the State (an action approved by voters in Maine on July 19, 1819, by 17,001 to 7,132); then, on February 25, 1820, the Massachusetts State Senate ratified the separation. passage of a follow-up measure recognizing Maine's impending statehood [17]
  7. ^ The Mexican Department of Alta California encompassed the majority of the territory that Mexico ceded to the United States in 1848 after the Bear Flag Revolt and the Mexican-American War. As a part of the Compromise of 1850, Congress passed an act making California the 31st state.
  8. ^ In an act passed on May 13, 1862, the General Assembly of the Restored Government of Virginia authorized the formation of West Virginia. Later, in Virginia v. West Virginia (1871), the Supreme Court implicitly affirmed that the seceding Virginia counties did have the necessary consents to become a separate state. [36]
  9. ^ a b North Dakota and South Dakota are the only states in the union that were born on the same day, mere minutes apart. Benjamin Harrison, before signing the statehood documents, shuffled them so that no one would know in advance which territory was about to become a state. Since "n" comes before "s" in the alphabet, North Dakota is traditionally counted as the 39th state and South Dakota as the 40th. [39][40]
