Ordered list of when each state joined the United States

State names and borders on a US map
Following the order in which the 13 original states ratified the Constitution in 1787, the remaining states were admitted to the Union.

A state is one of the 50 individual entities that make up the United States and have equal sovereignty with the federal government. Due to the division of powers between the federal government and the individual states, Americans hold dual citizenship. To distinguish themselves from other states, the official names of Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia all include the word "commonwealth" rather than "state."

The 50 states are the most basic administrative divisions of the USA. They have all the authority that isn't specifically given to or forbidden to the federal government by the United States Constitution. Generally speaking, matters of local concern are under the purview of state governments, including but not limited to: intrastate commerce regulation, election administration, the formation of local governments, public school policy, and the construction and maintenance of roads that are not funded by the federal government. Each of the fifty states is governed by a separate government with its own executive, legislative, and judicial branches, as outlined in a state constitution based on republican principles. [2]

Congress is a bicameral legislature, made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives, in which all states and their citizens have a voice. Each state has two senators and at least one representative, with the size of each state's delegation in the House of Representatives determined by the state's population as of the most recent decennial census required by the Constitution. There's also the Electoral College, which votes for the President and Vice President of the United States, of which each state gets a certain number of representatives and senators to represent it. [4]

The Constitution specifically gives Congress the power to Union" target="_blank">admit new states into the Union in Article IV, Section 3, Clause 1. The original 13 states of the United States have been joined by 47 others since 1776. All newly admitted states have been given full voting rights. [5]

In the table below, you'll find information about when each of the 50 states became independent. After signing on to the United States Declaration of Independence in July 1776, the first 13 states formally entered the Union of States between 1777 and 1781 by ratifying the Articles of Confederation. (See below for a separate table detailing the ratification dates of the AoC.) In the order in which they joined the new (and current) federal government after ratifying the Constitution in 1787, these states are listed below. Each subsequent state's admission date is a statutory deadline established by Congress. [a]

The ratification of the Articles of Confederation [ edit ]

On November 15, 1777, the Articles of Confederation were approved by the Second Continental Congress and sent to the individual states for ratification. Once all 13 states ratified the Articles of Confederation, they became effective on March 1, 1781. The Articles of Confederation were abolished and replaced by the present Constitutional government on March 4, 1789. [45]

Notes [ edit ]

  1. ^ Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas seceded and formed the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War, but they are not included on this list because they were later readmitted to the Union. Similarly, the federal government does not recognize the states' separation from the Union, so each state's "readmission to representation in Congress" after the war is valid. Even though the Constitution is silent on the subject, the Supreme Court ruled in Texas v. White (1869) that a state cannot secede from the Union without the consent of the other states. [7]
  2. ^ The "Three Lower Counties Upon Delaware" are another name for these jurisdictions. The Delaware Assembly voted to end the colony's status on June 15, 1776, and the three counties became a state under "the Government of the Counties of New Castle" as a result of this resolution. The Counties of Kent and Sussex on the State of Delaware [9]
  3. ^ Between 1749 and 1764, New Hampshire's provincial governor Benning Wentworth issued roughly 135 grants for unoccupied land claimed by New Hampshire west of the Connecticut River (in what is today southern Vermont), territory also claimed by New York. The "New Hampshire Grants" conflict that erupted as a result inspired the founding of the Green Mountain Boys and the Vermont Republic. By royal decree from George III in 1764, New Hampshire lost all legal claim to the land, and in 1790, New York sold Vermont their land claim for $30,000.
  4. ^ On December 18, 1789, the Virginia General Assembly passed a bill approving the secession of the "District of Kentucky" from the rest of Virginia and paving the way for the establishment of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. [17]
  5. ^ The precise date that Ohio was admitted to the Union as a state is unknown. To "authorize the inhabitants of Ohio to form a Constitution and state government, and admission of Ohio into the Union," the 7th Congress voted on April 30, 1802 (Sess. 1, ch 40, 2 Stat. 173) It was on this same Congress's 19th day in 1803 that an act "providing for the execution of the laws of the United States in the State of Ohio" (Sess. 2, ch 7, 2 Stat. 201) However, neither statute established an official date of statehood. In 1953, the 83rd Congress passed a Joint resolution "for admitting the State of Ohio into the Union" (Pub. L. 83-204, 67 Stat. 407), officially making Ohio a state. 7 August 1953 ) which fixed the first of March, 1803 as the day it occurred [20]
  6. ^ On June 19, 1819, the Massachusetts General Court passed enabling legislation separating the "District of Maine" from the rest of the State (an action approved by voters in Maine on July 19, 1819, by 17,001 to 7,132); then, on February 25, 1820, the Massachusetts State Senate ratified the separation. another bill was passed recognizing Maine's impending statehood. [17]
  7. ^ The majority of the territory that Mexico gave to the United States after the Bear Flag Revolt and the Mexican-American War in 1848 had previously been part of the Mexican Department of Alta California. It was as a result of the Compromise of 1850 that California became the 31st state through an Act of Congress.
  8. ^ An act authorizing the formation of West Virginia was passed by the General Assembly of the Restored Government of Virginia on May 13, 1862. Later, in Virginia v. West Virginia (1871), the Supreme Court implicitly affirmed that the secessionist counties in Virginia did have the requisite consents to form a new state. [36]
  9. ^ a b North and South Dakota are the only states to have been born on the same day, and within minutes of each other. To ensure that no one would ever know which state became the first, President Benjamin Harrison shuffled all of the statehood documents before signing them. Considering that "n" comes before "s" in the alphabet, North Dakota is traditionally counted as the 39th state, while South Dakota is counted as the 40th. [39][40]
