A younger population means more people in the workforce, which means more tax revenue and higher economic output. As a country's population ages, it naturally loses workers and consequently economic output.

A population's age also correlates to distinctive characteristics in terms of culture, society, and politics. In this piece, I will examine the newest state in the United States, as well as the next nine newest, and provide brief descriptions and overviews of each. According to the median age, which represents the average age of a state's population, the states listed here are the youngest in the country.

Eighth on our list of the youngest states is Nebraska, which also has a median age of 37. Nebraska has one of the smallest populations in the country, at just under 2 million people, despite having a positive population growth rate for more than 30 years.

Between 19 and 34 year olds make up Nebraska's largest and second-fastest growing age group. The population of people 65 and older is growing at twice the rate of any other age group in the state, but they still only make up about 322,000 of the total population. About 125,000 fewer Nebraskans are between the ages of 0 and 4 than there were a decade ago.

South Dakota has a relatively young population despite being one of the least populated states in the country. The state has the same median age as the others, 37, and its population has grown consistently over the past decade, with the exception of 2020, when it essentially flatlined.

Except for the 0-4 age range, every other demographic has grown substantially over the past decade; the over-65 demographic has experienced the greatest expansion. The 5-19 age bracket constitutes South Dakota's largest age group, followed by those aged 20-34. The population of seniors 65 and older is the state's second-smallest demographic.
