The 20 States With the Lowest Intelligence, 2023

There is much disagreement about which states are the dumbest in the United States, with some arguing that the West Coast is far more enlightened than the rest of the country.

States with the lowest IQs in the United States S are hotly contested; some say the West Coast has more intelligent residents than any other part of the country, while others say the Midwest and the South have the dumbest people. The "Intelligence Quotient" (IQ) is a measure of a population's cognitive ability that can be calculated using standardized tests. Average IQ in the country is 98, with a wide range from 55 to 145. The closer a state's IQ is to 90, the "dumber" this state will be considered. The general consensus is that an IQ score of 90 or lower indicates a sub-average level of intelligence. That's bad news because it means more people in this state have low IQs compared to the rest of the country.

Intelligence: What Is It?

The ability to think, reason, solve problems, and learn is what we mean when we talk about intelligence. It's what allows us to interpret data, form novel ideas, and piece together disparate pieces of information into a coherent whole, allowing us to respond to novel situations and make sound decisions in a dynamic, unpredictable world.

An individual's IQ can be affected by their genetics, upbringing, and experiences. Studies have shown that a person's intelligence may be affected by factors outside of their genes, such as the size of their brain or the concentration of certain neurotransmitters. Conversely, there is proof that early life and developmental environmental factors, such as educational opportunities and dietary health, can serve as predictors of adult achievement. Personal habits, such as engaging in intellectually stimulating activities or engaging in regular exercise, may also improve cognitive performance.

It's important to keep in mind that intelligence is not necessarily a predictor of success in school or in the workplace. Instead, it's indicative of a person's cognitive flexibility and problem-solving prowess. It has also been argued that traditional IQ tests may not be accurate measures of one's overall intellectual capacity because intelligence is a complex phenomenon with multiple determinants at play. Consequently, while IQ scores can be informative about a person's intellectual aptitude and academic performance, they should not be taken as absolute indicators of that person's true intellectual capacity.

Define Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and Its Limits

An IQ below 70 is considered to be low by most standards. People with low IQs may struggle with basic skills like reading, writing, problem solving, and following directions. They might also have trouble focusing, remembering details, and gaining insight from their errors. A low IQ can have a negative impact on a person's professional and social life. It may also cause academic issues such as learning disabilities or inability to maintain concentration. Individuals with a low IQ may struggle to perform even the most fundamental acts of self-care, such as getting dressed or preparing food. Although there is no one-to-one relationship between IQ and achieving one's goals in life, those with lower IQs typically have a more difficult time breaking through to the next level.

Two to three percent of Americans are thought to have a low IQ. Environmental factors like poverty, poor nutrition, and inadequate health care can exacerbate underlying genetic predispositions to low IQ. In some cases, this may result from a learning disability or a delay in development.

Consequences of a Low IQ

The consequences of low IQ in the United States are severe for both individuals and the larger community. People with low IQs have a higher risk of experiencing poor mental health, as well as more obstacles to achieving academic and professional success. They also have a higher risk of being homeless or developing substance abuse problems, as well as dropping out of school. As a result of the strain they put on already-stretched social services and on the potential for economic growth, these socioeconomic challenges have repercussions for society at large.

Special education and other early intervention programs may help mitigate the effects of a low IQ. People with low IQs are often stigmatized in our society, which can further isolate them from social, educational, and occupational opportunities. People with low IQ often don't get the help they need for their development or mental health because there isn't enough understanding of the psychological complexity of the issue.

Stupidest Nations

The average IQ in Mississippi is only 94, making it the "dumbest" state in the country. 2 The average IQ of a resident of Louisiana is 95, making it the second "dumbest" state. 3 California ranks third in the nation with a mean IQ of 95. 5 Hawaii, with a national average IQ of 95, ranks as the fourth "dumbest" state in the country. 6 Having an IQ of 95, Alabama ranks as the fifth "dumbest" state. 7 According to the American Intelligence Ranking, New Mexico is the sixth "dumbest" state, with a mean IQ of 95. 7 Nevada, in eighth place, has an IQ of 96, not far behind California. 5 Arizona, with an IQ of 97, ranks as the eighth "dumbest" state. 4 The average IQ in Arkansas is 97. and holds the #9 position in the rankings Finally, with a national average IQ of 97, Tennessee ranks as the tenth "dumbest" state in the country. 7

There is a correlation between the public education systems in these states and their lower levels of educational attainment. As a result, fewer people in these areas are completing high school or going on to higher education, which may be a contributing factor to their already low IQ. For instance, the percentage of the population that does not possess a high school diploma is highest in California. When compared to the rest of the country, the percentage of Mississippi and Louisiana residents who have not completed high school is high, and similarly low numbers of students in these states graduate from their respective public high schools. It has also been found that a lack of access to adequate healthcare and nutritious food can have an impact on an individual's cognitive abilities. Some research suggests that residents of these states have a higher risk of developing health problems that, in turn, can lower their IQs.
