The order in which the states joined the United States.

State names and borders on a United States map
First, the order in which the 13 original states ratified the Constitution in 1787; then, the order in which the remaining states were admitted to the Union.

Each of the 50 states in the United States is a sovereign nation in its own right and shares power with the federal government. Due to the separation of powers between the federal government and the individual states, Americans hold dual citizenship. [1]The full official names of the states of Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia all include the word "commonwealth" rather than "state."

The 50 states make up the main divisions of the USA. They have all the authority that is not specifically given to or forbidden to the federal government by the United States Constitution. Concerns such as intrastate commerce, elections, the formation of local governments, public school policy, and non-federal road construction and maintenance are typically left to the jurisdiction of the respective state's government. Each state has a government that includes an executive, legislative, and judicial branch, and a constitution based on republican principles. [2]

The United States Congress is a bicameral legislature made up of senators and representatives from all 50 states. The number of representatives each state has in the House of Representatives is based on the population count from the most recent decennial census required by the Constitution. There's also the Electoral College, which votes for the President and Vice President of the United States, of which each state gets a certain number of representatives and senators to represent it. [4]

The power to Union" target="_blank">admit new states into the Union is delegated to Congress by Article IV, Section 3, Clause 1 of the Constitution. A total of 50 states now make up the United States, up from the original 13. All new states have been granted full membership with no special treatment. [5]

Please find below a table detailing the dates of statehood for each of the fifty United States. After signing on to the United States Declaration of Independence in July 1776, the first 13 states formally entered the Union of States between 1777 and 1781 by ratifying the Articles of Confederation. (See below for a separate table detailing the ratification dates of the AoC.) These states are listed in the order in which they joined the new (and current) federal government upon ratification of the Constitution in 1787. Each succeeding state's admission date is a statutory deadline mandated by federal law. [a]

Ratification of the Articles of Confederation [ edit ]

On November 15, 1777, the Articles of Confederation were approved by the Second Continental Congress and sent to the states for ratification. By March 1, 1781, all 13 states had ratified the Articles of Confederation, making them legally binding. The Articles of Confederation, which governed the states, were abolished on March 4, 1789, and the present Constitution, which governs the federal government, was adopted. [45]

Notes [ edit ]

  1. ^ Eleven states (Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas) seceded from the Union and fought in the Civil War to form the Confederate States of America, but they are not included on this list because they were later readmitted to the Union. Similarly, the federal government does not recognize the states' separation from the Union, so each state's "readmission to representation in Congress" after the war is valid. Even though the Constitution is silent on the subject, the Supreme Court ruled in Texas v. White (1869) that a state cannot secede from the Union without the consent of the other states. [7]
  2. ^ The "Three Lower Counties Upon Delaware" are another name for this area. On June 15, 1776, the Delaware Assembly formally adopted a resolution ending Delaware's status as a British colony and establishing the three counties as an independent state under "the Government of the Counties of New Castle." Upon the Delaware River, Kent and Sussex [9]
  3. ^ Nearly 135 grants for uninhabited land claimed by New Hampshire west of the Connecticut River (in what is now southern Vermont) were issued by provincial governor Benning Wentworth between 1749 and 1764. This territory was also claimed by New York. The "New Hampshire Grants" conflict that ensued sparked the rise of the Green Mountain Boys and eventually resulted in the founding of the Vermont Republic. By royal order of George III in 1764, New Hampshire's claim was terminated, and in 1790, the State of New York sold Vermont its land claim for $30,000.
  4. ^ On December 18, 1789, the General Assembly of Virginia passed a law approving the secession of the "District of Kentucky" from the rest of Virginia and paving the way for the establishment of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. [17]
  5. ^ Ohio's official statehood date is a mystery. To "authorize the inhabitants of Ohio to form a Constitution and state government, and admission of Ohio into the Union," the 7th Congress voted on April 30, 1802 (Sess. 1, ch 40, 2 Stat. 173) An act "providing for the execution of the laws of the United States in the State of Ohio" (Sess) was passed by the same Congress on February 19, 1803. 2, ch 7, 2 Stat. 201) Yet, neither statute established an official date of statehood. In 1953, the 83rd Congress passed a Joint resolution "for admitting the State of Ohio into the Union" (Pub. L. 83-204, 67 Stat. 407, enacted). This marked the official date that Ohio became a state. The 7th of August, 1953 (The Act Fixing March 1, 1803, Which Act) [20]
  6. ^ On June 19, 1819, the Massachusetts General Court passed enabling legislation separating the "District of Maine" from the rest of the State (an action approved by voters in Maine on July 19, 1819, by 17,001 to 7,132), and then, on February 25, 1820, the Massachusetts Legislature officially recognized the "District of Maine." passing a follow-up measure recognizing Maine's impending statehood [17]
  7. ^ The Mexican Department of Alta California encompassed the majority of the territory that Mexico ceded to the United States in 1848 after the Bear Flag Revolt and the Mexican-American War. As part of the Compromise of 1850, Congress passed an act making California the 31st state.
  8. ^ State of West Virginia was officially established by an act passed by the General Assembly of the Restored Government of Virginia on May 13, 1862. Later, in Virginia v. West Virginia (1871), the Supreme Court impliedly confirmed that the seceding Virginia counties had the requisite consents to form a new state. [36]
  9. ^ a b North Dakota and South Dakota are the only states to have been born on the same day, and within minutes of each other. There was some confusion over which territory became a state first, so President Benjamin Harrison shuffled the documents before signing them. Since "n" comes before "s" in the alphabet, North Dakota is traditionally counted as the 39th state, while South Dakota is counted as the 40th. [39][40]
