This is, statistically speaking, the most welcoming of the United States' fifty states — Top Pick for Living the Good

It's 2020, and you've heard that phrase “America has never been more divided” countless times. It may be difficult to cultivate neighborly kindness these days, let alone a disposition toward total strangers. There are, however, regions of the country that are friendlier and more hospitable than others. We've compiled data from four categories to find out which state is the friendliest, and where you're more likely to be greeted with a smile and a wave rather than an angry tirade. And here's the flip side: This is the least welcoming state in America.

We began with the U.S. Census Bureau's reported population change in each state over the last decade. S According to the Census Bureau, states with a net gain in population are more welcoming than those with a net loss. We also considered Big 7 Travel's Friendly Ranking, based on a recent survey of their 2 5,000,000+ online-community members Third, we considered the "community spirit" of each state by analyzing VolunteerMatch's data on the number of volunteer opportunities available per 100,000 residents. Finally, we looked at the latest FBI data on violent crime in each state, which may be seen as the antithesis of "community spirit." Using our algorithm, we calculated an overall Friendly Index score for every state. A lower score indicates that state is more welcoming to visitors.

And the friendliest state of them all may come as a pleasant surprise With over 13 volunteer opportunities for every resident, the city also has a relatively low rate of violent crime. But the state's rapid population growth is what puts it at the top of the list in terms of the friendliness factor. The population of this state increased by an astounding 14 percent over the past decade, and you probably never even heard that it was popular with new residents.

The scores show that the most welcoming states span the country from west to midwest to south, with no states in the northeast making the cut for the top 10. Find out where your home state ranks on our list of the friendliest to the least friendly states in America. This is the state where your dollar will go the furthest, so you might want to steer clear of it.
