To find out which states rank highest in happiness, researchers looked at recent data. Checking the rankings of your home state or daydreaming about moving somewhere else can be fun. Understanding the factors that contribute most to one's sense of well-being and the steps one can take, both in response to external factors and in pursuit of one's own goals, is also helpful.

Many studies have found that your genes, your environment, and your decisions all play a role in your level of happiness. Maybe unexpectedly, there's a gene for joy. What you've been through and where you are in life at the moment are also important factors. But the variables you control play a significant role in the success of the happiness formula. Create the conditions for happiness, and they will have a positive impact on your level of satisfaction, joy, and contentment, even if you didn't win the gene lottery or your situation isn't ideal.

So, to get things rolling, which states have the happiest residents? Amerisleep found that North Dakota was the happiest state overall, followed by Vermont, Nebraska, South Dakota, and California. See the full list of unhappiest states below, but Kentucky ranked dead last at #50. Factors such as residents' health, education, number of working hours, and safety were factored into the rankings of states' happiness (see full list of factors below).

North Dakota topped the list because of its favorable conditions in key areas like income growth, open spaces, and the presence of national parks. Health factors, including lower rates of depression, better sleep reported by residents, and easy access to hospitals, helped Vermont rise to second place in the happiness rankings. Part of Nebraska's third place finish can be attributed to its residents' relatively short commute times, easy access to gyms, and average number of workdays per week. The quantity of greenery in California is a major reason for its low ranking (fourth) among the states.

But regardless of where you call home, you can find happiness in the data we have collected on what makes people content. The OCED Better Life Index polled over 100,000 people from around the world to determine their shared values and priorities in life.

Health, education, work-life balance, environment, safety, housing, income, and employment status are the top ten factors that contribute to people's happiness. And with this information in hand, you can take steps toward boosting your happiness and contentment.

Knowing what you value most in life can help you find happiness. Maybe you share the views of the masses and think things like health and education are important. But it's okay if you don't The trick is to identify your top priorities so that you can invest your time, attention, and energy in the things that truly matter to you. An old adage says it best: "You get out of life what you put into it." Think of your time as you would money, and invest it in the things that bring you closer to your ideal self, your ideal goals, and the ideal relationships.

Determine what's most important to you in terms of your happiness.

Get to Work on Improving Your Situation

Of course, the circumstances you're living in have a significant impact on your level of contentment, but you also have the ability to take charge of your own life and make the choices that will ultimately bring you the most joy. In addition, taking initiative to better one's situation has been linked to increased happiness due to the resulting feelings of agency and empowerment.

Many people place a high value on their health because of the positive correlation between health and happiness. If this is you, make sure you schedule in time to work out and get enough rest. Depression and anxiety are treatable; if you're experiencing them, seek help. In your pursuit of health, you may also want to think about downloading an app that lets you keep track of the food you eat. Most people would agree that it's important to feel satisfied in both your professional and personal lives if you want to have a successful career. The researchers included the finding that volunteering increases happiness from previous studies. It's possible to get involved in volunteer activities that interest you. The length of time it takes to get to and from work is also a factor in how satisfied people are with their lives overall, according to data collected worldwide. Moving closer to your workplace can cut down on your commute time, but you can also make your commute more pleasant by doing things like listening to audiobooks on the train or driving in a carpool with coworkers.

One more thing you can do is work for change on a local level. Most people's happiness in the happiness index was correlated with their sense of security in their homes and their financial well-being, suggesting that focusing on these areas, and working together to make them better, may yield positive results.

Utilize your current environment

Although not everyone is lucky enough to call a state with abundant natural resources or spacious homes home, there are positive aspects to be found in every community. Try exploring a nearby neighborhood if you can't take a stroll along the river. If you don't have a downtown area, you can always meet a friend for coffee at the local diner. People rank access to educational opportunities as one of the most important factors in their lives, so if you and a friend don't have any in your area, look for some online.

Use what you have to its full potential. Happiness research consistently reveals a link between gratitude and satisfaction with life. Consequently, be grateful for what you have and take advantage of all the resources at your disposal.

Release your desire for perfection.

Happiness inflation, the belief that one should always be happier than one was the day before, is a common misconception. Happiness, however, is more ephemeral than that. Even if you have days when you're down or seasons of life when you're not singing from the rooftops with unbridled enthusiasm, you can still have an overall sense of joy and contentment.

In a similar vein, there is no such thing as ideal circumstances. You enjoy some parts of your job and dislike others. While you adore your significant other, there may be some things about them that drive you crazy. Furthermore, there is no such thing as a perfect location. There are advantages and disadvantages to every possible path in life. The trick is to pick the ones that are the most in line with your interests, and to abandon the idea that there is a best option.

Focus on the things that matter most to you and work toward making them a reality. Stop trying to achieve or waiting for perfection. It's as simple as making the best decisions you can and working toward the goals that will bring you the most joy.

In Sum

While it is true that happiness is induvial, it is also true that it is possible to aggregate what makes people happy and rank states where the conditions seem best for happiness. Have faith in the things that bring you joy, and don't look to others for validation. You can be happy anywhere you go if you choose to cultivate an optimistic outlook and take constructive action.

North Dakota, Vermont, Nebraska, South Dakota, California, Rhode Island, Iowa, Montana, Oregon, and Utah are the ten happiest states in the union. In the bottom ten list of happiest states, you'll find Kentucky at number 50, followed by West Virginia, Tennessee, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, and Washington.

A total of 17 indicators were used to determine how each state ranked on the happiness scale. These indicators include the percentage of residents who report being depressed, the percentage of residents who report getting inadequate sleep, the percentage of residents who belong to health clubs, the percentage of residents who commit suicide, the average number of hours worked per week, income growth, divorce rates, volunteer rates, commute times, and home sizes. features such as the state's tree cover, parks, open areas, beauty, security, educational opportunities, health care facilities, and crime rates are all important factors. People's top priorities include things like these: health, education, work-life balance, environment, safety, housing, and income.
