- Despite the prevalence of news coverage devoted to the opioid crisis, methamphetamine overdose deaths are on the rise, too.
- Based on the most recent available data, Michigan has the highest rate of methamphetamine seizures.
- There is a disproportionate number of meth-related incidents in the Midwest, but methamphetamine is also widely available in other parts of the country.
Media coverage frequently focuses on the devastating effects of the opioid crisis, which has persisted in the United States for decades. To be sure, there are a variety of other potentially harmful substances raising eyebrows across the nation. In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of deaths blamed on psychostimulant drugs, especially methamphetamine. The most recent statistics show that there were 25,300 deaths related to psychostimulants like meth in the year prior to January 2021. But in the 12 months prior to January 2020, this figure was 16,888
The National Institute on Drug Abuse has found that non-Hispanic American Indians and Alaska Natives have a disproportionately high rate of death from methamphetamine use. Over the period from 2011 to 2018, the number of deaths attributed to meth increased by more than four times among these demographics.
Crimes involving meth are most common in the Midwest, but increases in meth use and related deaths have been reported across the country. By these measures, it is clear that the United States is suffering from not only an opioid epidemic but also a methamphetamine crisis.
Data on the frequency with which each state's highway patrol makes meth-related seizures was compiled by the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) until 2018. Seizures involve the discovery of meth labs, chemical supplies, glassware, and waste disposal areas.
In 2018, these were the top five states for seizures related to meth:
- New York
- Carolina del Norte
It all starts in Michigan, the Meth Capital of the United States
Meth use and incarceration both increased in recent years in Michigan. According to the MSHP report, Michigan had 220 meth-related seizures in 2018, more than any other state. Interlochen Public Radio reported that Wexford County Prosecutor Jason Elmore said, "Crystal meth is cheap." The use of crystal meth is extremely common. More people are using crystal meth because it is more affordable than heroin. ”
Recently, the use of heroin and other opioids has become a major problem throughout the Midwest; however, recently, methamphetamine use has also increased. The combination of opioids and psychostimulants is extremely dangerous and can have fatal consequences very quickly. It has been reported by the CDC that the number of fatal overdoses involving a mixture of opioids and meth has been rising in recent years.
Convulsions Caused by Meth in the U.S. S
The availability of methamphetamine is highest in the West and the Midwest, as reported by the DEA's 2020 National Drug Threat Assessment. However, the availability of meth is also quite high in the Northeast and the Southeast.
According to a report from the Montana Legislative Services Division, states west of the Mississippi River had a higher rate of federal crimes involving meth in 2018 than the rest of the country. In many U.S. attorney's offices, less than a third of drug convictions involved meth. However, meth was involved in 61% of federal drug crimes in one Montana district.
According to the report, Montana is among the Western states with the highest rates of convictions related to methamphetamine. In 2018, however, there were a lot of federal meth convictions in neighboring states as well, including Idaho, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Wyoming.
Analysis of State-Level Meth Use, 2013 and 2018
The following states ranked highest in meth seizures in 2013, as reported by the MSHP in their 2014 report:
- State of North Carolina
- Columbia, South Carolina
In some states, the number of methamphetamine confiscations fell between 2013 and 2018. In Indiana, for instance, there were 1,797 meth seizure incidents in 2013 but only 114 in 2018. While this may be true, it doesn't change the fact that deaths caused by psychostimulants as a whole in the United States have been on the rise. S
Even though the number of incidents has gone down, meth use is still a major problem as the number of deaths directly attributable to the drug has been steadily rising. Overdose deaths are especially common when meth is used in combination with other drugs, so education and prevention are crucial in this regard.
Meth Addiction Treatment
Methamphetamine is among the world's most addictive substances. Chief Medical Officer at Advanced Recovery Systems, Kevin Wandler, thinks the high levels of dopamine meth produces in the brain are what make it so addictive. The neurotransmitter dopamine has been linked to feelings of euphoria, improved memory, and an elevated disposition.
Wandler explained to The Recovery Village that "where a cigarette or a glass of alcohol releases about 150 units of dopamine, meth is like 1,000 units of dopamine." Because it is typically inhaled, its effects are felt almost instantly. ”
Intense highs from drugs like methamphetamine can lead to a user's compulsive use of the drug. A person's tolerance to methamphetamine's stimulating effects can increase with repeated use. Meth tolerance can lead to meth dependence. Addiction is a possible outcome of chronic dependence.
Meth addiction is a universal problem. Addiction to meth can be treated successfully in a clinical setting, and you should seek it out if you or someone you know is struggling with this disease. Under the direction of Dr. A number of Kevin Wandler's The Recovery Village facilities have received official accreditation and licenses to provide substance abuse treatment across the country.
