The IRS mandates that employers send out or make W2s available to their employees by January 31. Taxes On Unemployment Benefits

All benefits are considered gross income for federal income tax purposes. This includes benefits paid under the federal CARES Act, Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation , state Extended Benefits , Trade Adjustment Assistance , Pandemic Unemployment Assistance , Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation , and Lost Wages Assistance . DES reports these benefits to the Internal Revenue Service for the calendar year in which the benefits were paid.

You may choose to have federal income tax withheld from your unemployment benefit payments at the rate of 10% of your gross weekly benefit rate , plus the allowance for dependents .

The amount deducted for state income tax will be 10% of the amount deducted for federal taxes, which is currently calculated as 1% of the gross weekly benefit amount. Please Note: State income tax cannot be withheld from the 0 additional weekly benefit in Lost Wages Assistance and the 0 additional weekly FPUC benefit for regular UI claims. Claimants who received FPUC and/or LWA in regular UI will be responsible for paying any tax due on those amounts when filing state income taxes for calendar year 2020.

After selecting your tax withholding on the initial Unemployment Insurance application, you can change your withholding preferences by completing the Voluntary Election for Federal/State Income Tax Withholding form . After completing the form, submit it to DES by mail or fax.

How To Claim Unemployment Benefits

Each state has its own guidelines for how to claim unemployment benefits. There are also, typically, requirements you must follow to continue receiving the benefits.

The first thing to do is gather the documents you will need to file your claim. This is because when you file a claim, your states unemployment insurance agency will ask you for details around your former employment, such as addresses and dates. You should take the time to provide the most complete and accurate information you can, as it lessens the chances of your claim being delayed.

Second, you should contact your State Unemployment Insurance agency as soon as possible after you become unemployed. You dont always have to walk into an office because in some states it is now possible to file a claim by telephone or over the Internet.

A general tip is that you should file your claim with the state where you worked. However, if you lived in one state but worked in another or you worked in multiple states, the unemployment insurance agency of the state where you live now can help you with information on how to file your claims with the other states.

Usually, youll get your first benefit check about two to three weeks after youve filed your claim if you qualify.

Biden Stimulus Package Unemployment Extensions

Part 1 How Long Does Extended Unemployment Benefits Last

Congress and President Biden have now passed into law the trillion stimulus package, also known as the American Rescue Plan . It includes further unemployment program extensions until September 6th, 2021 for the PUA, PEUC and FPUC programs originally funded under the CARES act in 2020 and then extended via the CAA COVID Relief Bill. The need for another unemployment stimulus was reinforced by the prevailing high unemployment situation in many parts of the country due to the ongoing COVID related economic fallout.

Advantages Of Extended Unemployment Benefits

Paying benefits has a similar, but even more direct effect as that of lower interest rates. Benefit payments give the unemployed more money to spend, increasing demand.

Most government spending takes the form of job programs, in which the government hires workers and businesses directly to build things or provide services. Benefits eliminate the middleman. In doing so, benefits put money directly into the pockets of those who will spend it right away. This is why many feel unemployment benefits are the best stimulus.

Enhanced Unemployment Extensions Under Covid Relief Stimulus Bill

Common sense has prevailed and President Trump has now signed the 0 billion COVID relief stimulus bill into law, despite his reservations and following widespread condemnation against his last minute complaints. This now releases, among many other items, funding for the enhanced unemployment benefit programs and stimulus checks to millions of Americans.

For those receiving UI benefits under the PUA and PEUC programs you should continue certifying weekly as payments will be made retroactively once the final bill is approved. While you wont receive payments, you want to ensure you dont face delays when back payments start. For those who have exhausted their benefits, they will have to unfortunately have to wait until the final bill is passed before next steps are known.

U

Full federal support of extended benefits, as described in the CARES Act, ends on December 31, 2020. That means both the PEUC program and the PAU program benefits will expire by years end unless Congress acts.

There is broad agreement, though, that the economy is not likely to have recovered by then.

Many businesses are still reeling from the effects of the pandemic19.4 million Americans said in September that they had not worked at all, or had worked fewer hours, over the previous month because their employer closed or lost business due to the pandemic. And the unemployment rate is still hovering just under 8 percent, more than double that of a year ago.

In a paper this August, economists from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities said the number of weeks of unemployment benefits available to workers whove lost their income may not be enough to protect millions of Americans from running out of benefits while the unemployment rate is still high.

Both political parties do agree additional relief is needed for those who have lost income because of the pandemic. So its still possible that the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program and the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program benefits will be extended into 2021. Theres also bipartisan support for some level of supplemental employment benefits. Its not clear yet, though, how much relief will come from Congress or when.

It May Be Too Late To Prevent A Delay In Benefits For Some Families

Biden renewed pandemic unemployment programs before they were scheduled to expire on March 14. But because it can take states several weeks to reprogram their UI systems, some families may see a delay in their continued aid this spring.

Those delays have happened before. President Trump waited until the day after the previous legislation expired in December to sign the previous stimulus bill, which caused an estimated 14 million people to temporarily lose benefits. One month after the law’s enactment, nearly a quarter of states had not resumed paying out the 0 weekly benefit, according to calculations from The Century Foundation. An additional 12 states took three weeks or more to restart their PUA payments, and 15 states needed three weeks or more to reinstate PEUC. In total, The Century Foundation estimates the delays shortchanged jobless workers by about .6 billion in benefits for the first four weeks in January 2021.

With delays expected yet again, “it’s mind boggling,” Shierholz says. “We didn’t put anything into place that would prevent this from happening. There’s no other way to say it. We could put in automatic stabilizers so Congress wouldn’t have to continually revisit these things. But we don’t do that.”

How 0 Delayed The Senate Vote

The already-close Senate vote on the third stimulus bill was derailed for more than 10 hours on March 5 by one man: Senator Joe Manchin, a centrist Democrat from West Virginia.

Manchin had been critical of giving too much direct aid to Americans through this round of stimulus funding, stating it could keep people from returning to work, and wanted to target payments like stimulus checks as closely as possible to people most in need of an economic boostnamely, those with lower incomes.

While the version of the stimulus bill passed by the House of Representatives included a 0 weekly federal unemployment benefit supplement through August, Manchin resisted that amount. For several hours, Manchin considered supporting a Republican amendment that would end a 0-weekly unemployment benefit extension in July.

But Manchin eventually agreed to a Democratic proposal to continue the current 0 weekly benefit through Sept. 6, along with the tax break on some unemployment income earned in 2020.

The president has made it clear we will have enough vaccines for every American by the end of May and I am confident the economic recovery will follow, he said in a statement on March 5. We have reached a compromise that enables the economy to rebound quickly while also protecting those receiving unemployment benefits from being hit with unexpected tax bill next year.

No Federal Unemployment Benefits Extension And What Happens After September Expiry Latest Pua Peuc And Extra 0 News And Updates

With the expiry of federal enhanced unemployment benefit programs like PUA, PEUC, 0 FPUC and 0 MEUC after September 6th 2021 in all states, there has been considerable chatter around what happens next.

The cessation of unemployment benefits without another extension to the end of 2021, is obviously a big concern for the 8 million jobless or under-employed claimants impacted by the impending pandemic unemployment cliff that will result in them losing all current and future benefits under the PUA, PEUC or supplementary 0 FPUC programs. You can see the latest on benefit extensions in the sections below.

Once the federal pandemic programs end jobless claimants will only have access to traditional state unemployment. But this will leave many in the lurch since they wouldnt qualify for traditional state unemployment under current rules. And even if they do qualify, in many states the maximum amount of state unemployment benefits is barely enough to live on.

How Long Do Extended Unemployment Benefits Last A State

For the millions of Americans whove lost their jobs in this pandemic, unemployment benefits can be critical to covering the bills while seeking new work.

Displaced workers received some additional relief under the CARES Act, passed by Congress this spring, which included supplemental weekly federal unemployment benefits and also extended unemployment benefits for some for up to 59 weeks.

But if youre among the millions whove lost income or a job because of the coronavirus pandemic, whether you can collect benefits for that long depends on what state you live in. Heres what to know.

With increased levels of unemployment, the lines at food pantries have been longer. Unemployment was … 7.9 percent in September.

A Compromise On Extending Unemployment Benefits

How Long Does Unemployment Last (And Extra 0) in 2020 with the CARES Act?

It appears highly likely that the President and his administration will have to provide some level of support to the millions of unemployed workers given the resurgence of the Coronavirus in several states that has forced extended business closures. As such a Senate proposal by the Democrats called The American Workforce Rescue Act , may provide a party line compromise that the president could get behind, particularly as the presidential election is only a few months away. The AWRA proposal would continue to provide the full 0 extra weekly unemployment payment as long as the states unemployment rate is above 11%. When it drops below 11% , it will start to phase out to until the states unemployment rate drops below 6%. So essentially 0 less for every percentage drop between 11% and 6% of a states unemployment rate.

With the current provisions expiring in a few weeks, I expect that that Congress will eventually craft a bill to extend these UI benefits to the end of 2020 using a hybrid of one of the above proposals which may well also include another 2020 stimulus check to cover those not eligible for unemployment benefits.

The table below shows the impact of losing the extra 0 weekly payment against the maximum weekly benefit amount current paid by state unemployment agencies. As you can see, in several states it is pretty significant and the impact is much, much higher if you are not getting close to the maximum amount in your respective state.

Biden Emergency Extension To Pandemic Unemployment Benefits

With the rapid spread of and potential economic slowdown from the virulent Delta COVID-19 strain there is now talk of the Biden administration repurposing some of existing ARPA stimulus bill funding to extend pandemic unemployment programs to the end of 2022.

This is similar to the six week LWA extension that President Trump passed by executive order last year when Congress could not initially agree on funding an extension to pandemic unemployment benefits.

If Congress cannot provide additional funding then this will be the most likely path for a short-term emergency extension of pandemic benefits and could be done relatively quickly along party lines, or simply by a Presidential Executive order. White House lawyers are likely already working on this as a possible option.

Note that states which had ceased participation early in the federally funded unemployment programs will need to reapply to get access to this short term extension, if indeed it is passed.

Update: No Biden Executive Order States Have Funding To Expand Unemployment Benefits

The Biden Administration has confirmed that they wont push to extend federally funded unemployment benefits past the September 6th expiration date via Executive Order or Congressional action. Instead they are encouraging states with high unemployment to use some of the existing 0 billion in ARPA stimulus allocated for State and Local Fiscal Recovery initiatives to fund enhanced unemployment benefits.

As discussed in this video, there is wide latitude for usage of these funds by state governors and departments, which includes funding emergency unemployment benefits. States who ended participation early in federal unemployment programs could also use these funds to extend/expand benefits if they choose to do so.

Some claimants may be eligible for State Extended Benefits , but after September 4th all claimants must have a regular UI claim to continue receiving benefits. See more in these state specific unemployment pages.

Now, almost two months after these orders were passed, unemployment benefit funds are no longer distributed in many of the states. So far, the states that have ended the distribution of aid are Texas, Utah, Iowa, Florida, California, Arizona, Alabama, Georgia, Montana, North Carolina, Tennessee, Louisiana, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Idaho, New Hampshire, Missouri.

That said, millions of Americans have begun to question whether and how long the benefit will be extended again. Well, at the moment there are no signs of a new extension of unemployment benefits, since it is estimated that this aid is part of the new economic rescue in fact, the new Republican proposal of 1.8 billion includes the distribution of 0 a week as unemployment assistance.

For now, all that remains is to wait for the approval of a new stimulus package. It is worth mentioning that states that have not yet distributed the 0 in federal aid will have to send the payments in the next few weeks, either in weekly deposits or in a one-time payment of ,800.

However, the bill specifies that “a State shall provide flexibility in meeting such requirements in case of individuals unable to search for work because of COVID-19, including because of illness, quarantine, or movement restriction.” Individual states will offer guidance on how to extend benefits through this program.

In addition to the weekly benefit amount you can receive under PEUC, you will also be eligible for 0 per week under the FPUC program beginning after March 14, 2021, and ending on or before Sept. 5, 2021. Previously, 26 states ended their participation in the FPUC program early, before the Sept. 5 deadline. The best way to confirm the status of your unemployment benefits is to check with your state’s unemployment office. The Department of Labor lists the contact information for all fifty states’ labor offices on its website.

A “nonreduction” rule in the CARES Act prevents states from doing anything to decrease the maximum number of weeks of unemployment insurance or the weekly benefits available under state law as of Jan. 1, 2020.

IRS Phone Numbers: How To Speak To A Human At The IRS ...

07-03-2022 · Call the IRS telephone number at 1-800-829-1040. This line is open Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 7 PM local time. The automated system will ask you to …

07-03-2022

We’ve all been there–you need to speak with someone at the IRS about a tax issue, and you’re having a hard time getting an actual human being on the phone. It’s frustrating. We want to help you avoid this annoyance and get your tax solutions quickly. Whether you’re calling the stimulus check phone number or the general IRS phone number, you need a live person.

New: Expensivity ranks the best online tax prep and filing services of 2022

This guide helps you navigate the different communication channels within the IRS. Soon, you will be speaking to the correct IRS representative for your situation.

Why You Would Need to Call the IRS

According to the IRS, the IRS website should be your first resource for help and information because of the sheer volume of calls. The IRS will not address the following issues on the phone:

  • You have questions about tax law
  • You have transcript requests (unless you call 800-908-9946)
  • You need IRS forms
  • You want to check your refund status, but it’s been less than 21 days since you filed
  • You have complaints about your taxes or tax-related issues

You may want to call the IRS and speak with an actual person if:

  • You received a notice from the IRS (ALWAYS call the number on the notice)
  • You will miss a deadline set by the IRS and need to request more time. For example, extensions for paying off your tax balance, to send more information, or to respond to a notice from the IRS.
  • “Where’s My Refund?” says you need to call
  • You require the amount you need to pay off for tax purposes
  • You have questions about your IRS payment plan (installment agreement)
  • You want to know the status of any IRS action (like a penalty abatement request)
  • You need to confirm that the IRS received your payment
  • You lost, never received, or received an incorrect Form W-2 and/or Form 1099-R

Prepare Yourself

Before you call, make sure you have all of the information that you need. The agent will ask you for some key pieces of information to verify your identity and continue the phone call. They may also need some information on you to help them find a solution. This information includes:

  • Social Security cards and birthdates for all people involved
  • If you don’t have a Social Security card, your Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
  • Filing status (whether you’re single, the head of household, married and filing jointly or married and filing separately)
  • Last year’s tax return to verify your identity
  • A copy of the tax return in question
  • Any letters or notices you received from the IRS

How Can You Speak Directly With An Agent at the IRS?

Here is our secret, multi-step route to getting transferred to an agent within the IRS customer service line. Please note that the IRS may update their system, and this sequence could change accordingly. Remember that this is only one solution out of many for speaking with an actual person at the IRS.

  • Call the IRS telephone number at 1-800-829-1040. This line is open Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 7 PM local time.
  • The automated system will ask you to select your preferred language.
  • Once you’ve set your language, choose option 2 for “Personal Income Tax” instead.
  • Press 1 for “form, tax history, or payment.”
  • Press 3 for all other questions.
  • Press 2 for all other questions.
  • The system will ask you to enter your Social Security number. Make sure you do not enter any numbers at this time.
  • The system will ask you twice, so make sure not to answer. Another menu will prompt you.
  • Press 2 within this menu for individual tax questions.
  • Press 4 for all other questions: the system should finally transfer you to a representative.

Other Ways to Reach a Real Person at the IRS

Visit Your Local IRS Office

The IRS runs local Taxpayer Assistance Center offices in every state. You can’t just show up at a local IRS office any time, but you must make an appointment ahead of time. That IRS number is 844-545-5640.

Give Your Local Taxpayer Advocate Service Center a Call

The Taxpayer Advocate Service is an independent organization within the IRS that helps people with tax problems that they can’t fix by themselves. Every state has at least one Taxpayer Advocate Service center. These centers are independent of the local IRS office and report to the National Taxpayer Advocate Service.

Other IRS Phone Numbers

Looking for the Stimulus Check Phone Number at the IRS?

There are some great options for finding out information about your stimulus check instead of calling the IRS phone line. The IRS’s purpose-built stimulus check website is an excellent and informative resource if you need to know where your stimulus check is, find out if you’re eligible for one, or check how much you should receive.

The IRS has also created an app called Get My Payment that everyone can use to monitor their stimulus check status. You enter some personal information and can find out whether the government has sent your check. If the government has sent your check, you can even use something called the USPS Informed Delivery tool to obtain notifications regarding your payment’s transit status.

In case you’re wondering, you can call the IRS for help with your stimulus check payments. A representative may be able to answer questions that the IRS website cannot answer. If your question is very specific or the provided online resources can’t help you resolve your issue, there is a phone number you can call for help.

Before calling the phone line, the IRS wants everyone to consult its frequently asked questions page on its website and the Get My Payment tool for information. If these resources can’t answer your questions, you will be able to call the IRS Economic Impact Payment line at 800-919-9835.

Remember that an automated recording will try to help you before you’re connected with an actual representative, so make sure to have your questions and basic personal information ready for identity confirmation.

Previously, the IRS phone lines were simply not equipped to handle the enormous amount of inquiries created by the stimulus check programs. The IRS has added thousands of phone representatives to answer common questions about Economic Impact Payments, which is the official term for the ,200 recovery checks provided by the CARES Act.

This is excellent news for any and every American concerned about their stimulus checks, no matter the reason. While millions of payments have successfully gone out so far, there have been many complaints.

Online reports of stimulus checks issued in wrong amounts and with dependents missing are common. Others have reported their checks going to the wrong bank accounts or even benefiting deceased taxpayers.

Where is the most beautiful place you have ever visited? We were asked this the other day, and as two people who have traveled to over 80 countries, I must admit it was a tough question to answer. A few places came to mind: Seychelles, Canada, and Namibia are certainly up there.

However, the tiny island nation of St Lucia packs a punch and is widely praised as the most beautiful island in the Caribbean. There are a number of resorts in St Lucia that are jewels in the Caribbean, but it’s hard to find one more unique than Jade Mountain.

Kauai

  • Things to do in Kauai

Of course, it’s Hawaii, so all the islands are amazing. However, the island that brings back the most wonderful memories is Kauai. I’m certain you will fall in love with the Garden Isle just as I did, but it can be hard to narrow down what to do with a short vacation.

There are so many things to do in Kauai, including a ton of free nature activities that it will be hard to ever get bored. Kauai is known for being one of the prettiest Hawaiian islands and the most laid back vibe of the four main islands. It’s perfect for those that want to step into nature and stretch their legs on a few hiking trails. February may be the high season, but it’s due to the tremendous weather you’re guaranteed. Get ready to plan your trip to Hawaii!

Venice

Things to do in Venice - Grand Canal
  • Things to do In Venice - Canal
  • Things to do in Venice - Sunset

We always manage to visit Venice in the winter and because of this we’ve never dealt with any of the negatives that people often complain about with Venice. The Grand Canal is a wonder of the world with centuries of architecture, grand buildings, and history literally spilling into the buzzing thoroughfare. Visit large cathedrals, museums, and magnificent squares before dipping into charming narrow backstreets with hidden churches, bars, and churches.

The beauty of the canals never got old; it truly is something out of this world. However, the time of year you plan to visit Venice crucial.  We unexpectedly went there in the middle of February and hit it right with prices and with crowds.

However a simple Google search of “Venice crowds” yields photos of the mass amount of tourists that flock to Venice every summer. Having the city to yourself is one of the many advantages of traveling during the off season.  Of course, if you want a slightly more festive atmosphere time your trip for The Venice Festival and attend a costume ball.

South Africa

  • Things to do in Cape Town - Drive
  • The view from Cape Point, South Africa.

A road trip around South Africa is the ideal way to explore the country. South Africa has a good infrastructure of roads and plenty of sights during a long road trip. For us, it was our first introduction to Sub-saharan Africa and our first destination to go on safari.

We arrived in South Africa bright-eyed and excited to embark on an epic South African road trip. The Cape of Africa contains vast and diverse landscapes that are unlike any other place on earth. In Kruger National Park we spotted lions and elephants, the Drakensberg Mountain found us peering over 3,000-foot cliffs, and Hermanus brought us face to face with great white sharks.

British Columbia

Best Ski Resorts in Canada - Fernie
  • Panorama - Canadian Rockies Ski Resorts
  • Panorama - Canadian Rockies Ski Resorts

Head down the Powder Highway that stretches from Central to Eastern British Columbia for some epic powder skiing in big mountain terrain. The Powder Highway is the nickname for Canada’s 95A a loop road that covers 630 miles through Southeastern Brittish Columbia. Powderhounds have everything they could want along the highway with small towns, epic ski resorts, untouched backcountry, cat skiing, alpine lodges, and heli-ski operations.

Big mountain riders are long familiar with the snowy stretch of Canada as the terrain and snow here are some of the best in the world. If you don’t have the money to shell out for the luxury providers, the seven ski resorts on the highway offer world-class skiing that rivals their helicopter counterparts. Each resort has enough terrain and to entertain any skill level for days on end. Our personal favorites are Fernie and Revelstoke for the terrain and epic powder dumps. Utah best places to ski: The secrets to skiing in the state

05-11-2021 · Robert Redford's lived in Utah since the '60s, and owned a restaurant in Park City's main street beside Ty Burrell's (Modern Family's Phil Dunphy) The Eating Establishment (he also owns two bars ...

Powder Mountain.
Powder Mountain.

At Powder Mountain – the largest ski resort by skiable area in the USA – I'm riding untouched calf-deep powder snow six days after it last snowed. "People don't know this place is up here, even people from Utah - and we're an hour's drive from the city [Salt Lake City]," the septuagenarian bus driver with long grey hair tied with a bandanna tells me as he takes me back to the top of the resort (there are 2000 skiable hectares of mountain beyond the ski runs, where you can be picked up by an old school bus). At Powder Mountain, there's one skier per hectare – how's that for social distancing?

Even closer than Powder Mountain – but in the other direction from Salt Lake City (Powder Mountain is north) - there's a rule at Sundance, the resort Robert Redford owned for 52 years, that once the car park's full, no-one else is allowed on the mountain, even though it's a tiny car park, that's said to never happen. One of Hollywood's iconic leading men might own his own ski resort (which comes complete with the bar Butch Cassidy's Hole-In-The Wall gang frequented in the 1890s as seen in the movie, Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid – it's a hell of a place for apres drinks), but there are so many great ski resorts in Utah that even Robert Redford's resort goes mostly unridden (there's also a Forbes 4-star restaurant on-site).

For all its ski resort offerings, Utah still flies under the radar of many Australian skiers. Yet there are seven ski regions and 10 world-class ski resorts in Utah within a one hour radius of Salt Lake City's international airport (which is less than two hours flight time from Los Angeles). What's more, unlike many ski area airports, you'll never be snowed in, or out. Utah's best-known resorts - like Park City, Deer Valley, Snowbird and Alta – are amongst the most awarded resorts in North America, yet they're still not the household names to Australians that Colorado's Vail and Aspen are (it's Deer Valley, however, that's won Best Ski Resort in the USA in the World Ski Awards for eight consecutive years). There are very few Australians to share the slopes with… so you'll always be an attraction to locals (ask for a beer and they'll think you want a bear, every… single… time).

It's easy to find a ski run with few others on it in Utah.
It's easy to find a ski run with few others on it in Utah.

It takes little effort to find a ski resort in Utah with few skiers on it that none of your ski friends have heard of. You don't even have to go as far as Powder Mountain or Sundance resort. Solitude ski resort is barely 30 minutes drive from Salt Lake's airport. Aptly named, it's lonely out here across over 100 runs, including one slope which hosted the prestigious downhill event in the 2002 Winter Olympics. Ideal for families, it's reasonably priced and offers ski-in, ski-out accommodation, plus it's connected to Utah's first ski resort, Brighton, where you'll find some of North America's best quality powder snow.

Or there's Snowbasin, just a few kilometres beyond the outskirts of Salt Lake City's northern suburbs (40 minutes from the airport), where few international skiers go, but where you can enjoy apres drinks in a day lodge that looks like it belongs in Vail or Aspen (minus the champagnes). Or keep driving 20 minutes north to Nordic Valley (formerly Wolf Mountain), a petite resort where only locals go, that's only 20 minutes south of Powder Mountain and where you're guaranteed powder runs on fresh snow days, even on the last run of the afternoon.

It's easy to weave between these little-known resorts on a road trip, though the distances between them can be less than 20 minutes. For those seeking even more solitude and fewer crowds, Southern Utah offers guaranteed crowd-free resorts, like Brian Head and Eagle Point, four hours drive south of Salt Lake City, where skiers can incorporate visits to Utah's famous national parks nearby (Zion and Bryce Canyon).

FIVE MORE SECRETS OF UTAH

1. SALT LAKE CITY IS ACTUALLY REALLY GREAT

Once most famous as the headquarters for the Mormon Church, in recent times Salt Lake City has redefined itself (many tech companies are moving headquarters here) with a burgeoning food scene unrivalled in the American West. Also home to trendy arts districts and a seven-day-a-week night life, it's surrounded by the Wasatch Mountains so hiking, skiing and climbing are never far away. And with only 250 000 people, it still feels homey.

2. NOWHERE DOES THE STARS LIKE UTAH

There are 24 parks and communities in Utah certified International Dark Sky Areas – the highest concentration of dark sky areas on Earth. Utah offers the best star gazing amongst the darkest night skies in North America. Watch from Dark Sky certified national parks like Bryce Canyon and Arches National Park, though you don't even have to go far out of Salt Lake City to find them: the closest (Antelope Island State Park) is barely 90 minutes away.

3. AND THEY'RE NOT THE ONLY STARS IN UTAH EITHER

If you prefer star-gazing of the Hollywood kind, there's as many around Utah as there are in Colorado. Mega-stars like Will Smith own homes around Park City, while Michael Jordan owns a place 20 minutes away. Robert Redford's lived in Utah since the '60s, and owned a restaurant in Park City's main street beside Ty Burrell's (Modern Family's Phil Dunphy) The Eating Establishment (he also owns two bars in Salt Lake City). Five minutes drive east, Deer Valley Resort hosts the likes of Brad Pitt.

4. IT'S HOME TO THE WORLD'S COOLEST FILM FESTIVAL

You've heard of the Cannes Film Festival – think of the Sundance Film Festival as Cannes… on snow. America's largest independent film festival runs in Park City – and features a showcase of the best new independent film-makers (it's launched the careers of everyone from Quentin Tarantino to Paul Thomas Anderson). For 10 days in January the world's best actors converge on the tiny ski town while musicians like Sting play at venues across town.

5. IT HAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATIONS OF NATIONAL PARKS IN THE US

There are five iconic national parks in Utah (Arches NP near Moab, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Zion NPs) – meaning Utah ranks third in America for states with the most national parks (behind only California and Alaska), and they're all easily accessible from each other. It's simple to ski in northern Utah then drive a few hours south to hike national parks. You could then drive two hours to Las Vegas.

HOUTZDALE, Pa. (WHTM) – Matthew Vanzandt, the Lancaster man sentenced for the 2019 fatal stabbing of his partner Ian Shannon, was found dead in his cell at SCI Houtzdale.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, prison security and medical staff attempted life-saving measures on Vanzandt on May 11 after he was found unresponsive in his cell. Vanzandt was pronounced dead at 8:11 p.m.

Vanzandt was serving a 12- to 24-year sentence for Murder (1st Degree) in Lancaster County. He had been at SCI Houtzdale since September 17, 2021.

Pennsylvania State Police at Clearfield were notified and will conduct an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Clearfield County Coroner’s Office.

In March 2019 police said they were at a home on the 400 block of Dickens Drive around 12:48 a.m. when a neighbor reported a possible domestic disturbance. The officers saw no signs of a disturbance, however, and no one answered the door.

Around 3:14 a.m., officers were asked to check on Shannon’s welfare. They returned to the home and found him dead in a second-floor bedroom.

The welfare check came after VanZandt sought medical attention for a hand injury at an Allentown hospital. He was covered in blood and told hospital staff that he had stabbed his boyfriend to death, the complaint states.

VanZandt told Allentown police that he and Shannon had argued, and Shannon was mocking him for wanting to end their relationship. He said when Shannon continued to mock him, he pulled out his pocket knife and stabbed Shannon several times in the face, neck, and body.

LOGAN, Utah (AP) — A vacant lot in south Logan has experienced the past century in a way that might be described as “roadside Americana.”

From a patch of farmland along the highway, it became the site of Logan’s first drive-in theater in 1947. And after hosting popcorn-munching families and “necking” teenagers for a decade or so, it was converted into a junkyard for Cache Valley’s rusting Buicks, Oldsmobiles and Ramblers, the Herald-Journal reported.

When the junkyard closed, the back of the still-standing screen frame was painted white and sported a Utah State University promotion. Now, the city has approved a site plan for a convenience store/gas station there.

Cache Valley motorists pass a prominent remnant of what was called the Logan Drive-In every time they cross 10th West on U.S. Highway 89-91. The big cement wall visible in the southwest corner of the intersection may look like an old movie screen but is actually a frame for a wooden screen that used to front it.

“I’ll hate to see it go, but I understand. You can’t hold onto everything,” said Friend Weller, a Hyrum resident who has researched the history of the Logan Drive-In along with its crosstown rival, the Cache Drive-In, once located where Sam’s Club now stands.

In the early ’90s, after scanning newspaper microfilm for theater clippings, Weller decided to poke around the property on U.S. 89-91 and found several artifacts of the old theater — all of which have sat largely undisturbed since then.

He identified a small building on the back of the lot as the theater’s bathrooms, and he speculates that a largely collapsed and overgrown cinderblock building about 50 yards from the screen housed the movie projector and snack bar.

A handful of old drive-in speaker poles can be found along the edge of the property. They’ve been pulled from the ground and have clumps of cement at their base, and the top of one pole still has electrical wiring. For those unfamiliar with drive-in theaters, cars entering the outdoor facilities would park in stalls next to one of these poles, each of which held a wired speaker that the driver of the vehicle could easily affix to a partially opened car window.

Weller said the poured-concrete frame of the Logan Drive-In, or what he called the “screen tower,” is reminiscent of the earliest drive-ins in the 1930s, and instead of speaker poles, some of those early-day outdoor theaters had a “big, honking speaker” on the top of the screen tower that broadcast sound throughout the property. This apparently wasn’t the case with the more modern Logan Drive-In. The Cache Drive-In, opened three years later on Memorial Day 1950, was even more up-to-date with a metal movie screen supported by metal scaffolding.

Newspaper ads from the early 1950s show that the two drive-ins engaged in a massive price war, with entry for a carload of people eventually dropping as low as a dime. Weller said the owners were able to admit crowds virtually for free because a lot of their profit came from food and snack sales.

Majorie Andersen of Wellsville remembers loading up the car with kids, blankets and pillows to take in movies at the Logan Drive-In. At the time, her family was farming the property now occupied by the American West Heritage Center, so the theater was just a short drive up the road.

She can still recall some of the movies the family watched but said the cartoons preceding the movies were almost a bigger attraction, especially for kids, who often fell asleep well before a double-feature ended.

The Western movie “The Outlaw” was the Logan Drive-In’s feature film on the weekend of June 18, 1948. An ad for the theater in The Herald Journal featured an alluring illustration of actress Jane Russell and touted the film as “Howard Hughes’ daring production … exactly as it was filmed!! Not a scene cut!!”

Andersen remembers the hoopla surrounding the movie and thinks she may have seen it at the Logan Drive-In. “We didn’t take the kids to that one,” she said with a chuckle.

According to the nostalgia website Cinema Treasures, the Logan Drive-In was opened by a man named Elmer Brown. The Herald Journal this week was unable to find any information on Brown, but it appears he sold the theater after only two years of operation, evidenced by a newspaper ad at the beginning of the 1949 summer season announcing the business was under new management.

Cinema Treasures notes the The Cache Drive-In was originally owned by Harris-Voeller Theatres, but Weller and other locals remember the owner as well-known valley businessman Harold Heninger, who died in 2006. Weller once came across a promotional flyer listing upcoming movies for both theaters, which makes him wonder if the Cache Drive-In, under one or the other owner, might have bought out Brown.

The Cache Drive-In, which lasted into the 1980s, was much larger than its south-end rival, boasting 508 stalls compared to the Logan’s roughly 300. It also had more sophisticated technology.

“From what I know the Cache had bigger, brighter lamp houses in their projection system so the picture would look better,” Weller said. “The Logan, being a cement screen tower like that was only designed for what was called flat film, not scope film … so when they came out with CinemaScope films after the Logan had closed, the Cache added wings to the side of their screen tower to be able to accommodate the wider format.”

Plans for a combined convenience store, gas station and restaurant on the old theater property were approved by the Logan Planning and Zoning Commission in September, but at that time property owner Blake Dursteler said the project was only conceptual and not necessarily a certainty. He could not be reached for comment this week.

Weller, a technology whiz who works at Utah Public Radio and runs his own low-watt radio station in Hyrum, said he researched local drive-ins in the 1990s because he had a notion to start his own theater. Weller is an aficionado of early-day lighting and sound technology, and his uncle was a projectionist for the Grand Vu Drive-In in Moab for 32 years. His uncle’s job sparked the young Weller’s interest in the projection processes involved as well as the cultural phenomenon of watching movies outdoors.

“My grand scheme was opening a drive-in and using vintage equipment,” Weller said. “I thought it would be really fun. My uncle died a long time ago or he probably would have said no, don’t do it. It’s very much like a mom-and-pop business. You live there, you don’t go to work, you are at work all the time.”

Although five drive-ins still operate in Utah, the number of outdoor theaters here and nationwide has dwindled steadily over the past four decades. Weller cites several reasons for this, including the advent of VCRs in the 1980s, the rising value of land along major roadways and the longtime struggle of drive-ins to screen first-run films.

But in the 1940s and ’50s when Logan’s two drive-in theaters were packing in customers, conditions were ripe for the product. As Weller puts it:

“The whole concept of the drive-in was you could come home from work and you didn’t have to get cleaned up to go out. … People were hot, they were tired, there was no television, and if you wanted to go to the movies in the cinema, you had to get all cleaned up, dressed up. With a drive-in theater you could just pull up in your car, come as you are.”
